With the announcement of the discontinuation of HoloLens 2 production, Microsoft is ending a groundbreaking hardware project in the field of mixed reality and spatial computing. This decision marks the end of a device that was once celebrated as a pioneering innovation in mixed reality. Remaining inventory will be sold off, while software and security update support will continue until the end of 2027. Support will be completely discontinued from 2028 onwards, marking the definitive end for HoloLens and the Windows Mixed Reality development environment.
In January 2015, Microsoft unveiled the HoloLens for the first time during a Windows 10 event. Instead of focusing on PC software, the HoloLens captured attention and surprised with its futuristic technology. Its ability to project virtual objects into the real world using transparent displays set it apart from emerging virtual reality headsets, which completely immersed users in computer-generated worlds. Microsoft called this technology „Mixed Reality,“ where virtual holograms were embedded into the physical environment and could even interact with it.
While there were initial hopes that the HoloLens could revolutionize the gaming market, Microsoft soon shifted its focus to professional applications. The HoloLens 2, introduced in 2019, was primarily designed for industrial use. Remote maintenance was the use case most promoted by Microsoft for the HoloLens 2: A technician could have a circuit diagram and precise instructions projected into their headset from an expert located elsewhere, while simultaneously streaming their own view back through the camera on the HoloLens. This highlighted the potential of the HoloLens for remote maintenance and training applications in industry.
An essential factor that may have contributed to HoloLens production being discontinued are the device's technological and strategic limitations. Despite its significant innovative potential, the HoloLens always felt like a development kit and never like a true consumer product. A critical shortcoming was the limited number of apps specifically tailored to the headset's mixed reality features. Without a diverse and engaging app ecosystem, the HoloLens lacked incentives for a broader user base. Furthermore, the HoloLens 2 exclusively relied on hand tracking for input. However, this type of tracking was at times quite inaccurate and required large hit areas in the interfaces to be easily usable by users.
Another critical aspect that contributed to the HoloLens's lack of adoption are the problems the headset experienced during its deployment with the U.S. military. While the HoloLens was seen as a potential tool to enhance tactical efficiency and assist soldiers with complex operations, the devices encountered significant practical difficulties.
Interestingly, many of the technologies that Microsoft first brought to the public with the HoloLens can be found today in other successful devices. Both the Meta Quest 3 and the Apple Vision Pro integrate elements that were first showcased with the HoloLens – albeit in a more optimized and user-friendly form. We are talking about hand tracking and spatial awareness technology (the headset can not only locate itself in a room but also creates a 3D map of its surroundings).
The decision to discontinue production raises questions about Microsoft's technological and strategic approach. The high price and limited target audience were significant hurdles from the start. While mixed reality technology continues to hold immense potential, market readiness may not have been sufficient to appeal to a broader audience. Incidentally, this approach strongly resembles that of Apple Vision Pro. We will see if Apple's VR headset can establish itself in the market long-term.
Although Microsoft has discontinued the HoloLens, mixed-reality technology is far from disappearing. Many of the ideas and innovations that were driven by the HoloLens live on in other projects and companies.
