Meta Quest 3S: A low-cost option

Meta Quest-3S

Meta recently introduced the Meta Quest 3s, a more affordable version of its flagship Quest 3 headset. While it has the same powerful processor as the Quest 3, the Quest 3s offers a slightly different configuration that makes it a more affordable option.

Main differences to Quest 3

The typical features of the Quest 3s are

  • Less RAM and storage space: This can affect the performance of certain demanding games or applications, especially those that require more storage space.
  • Other lenses: The Quest 3s may use Fresnel lenses, which may produce some visual artifacts such as God Rays (bright halos around light sources) compared to the Pancake lenses likely used in the Quest 3.
  • Narrower field of view: The Quest 3s offers a slightly smaller field of view (1832×1920 per eye) than the Quest 3 (2064×2208 per eye).

A good choice for price-conscious VR enthusiasts

Despite the lower RAM and storage capacity, different lenses and narrower field of view, the Quest 3s is a compelling option for those looking for an affordable VR experience. It offers access to a wide range of VR games and applications that allow users to explore immersive worlds and enjoy interactive experiences.

No significant innovations for Quest 3 owners

If you're looking for an affordable entry into the world of VR, the Meta Quest 3s is a good choice. It offers a good balance of features and performance at an affordable price.

However, it is important to note that the Quest 3s does not introduce any significant innovations or features that would justify a major upgrade for existing Quest 3 owners. The device primarily serves as a low-cost alternative for those on a budget.

A missed opportunity for progress

While affordability is a key factor in the expansion of VR technology, a more progressive approach could have been to introduce genuinely new features or technologies that would set the Quest 3s apart and appeal to a wider audience.

So we have to wait until Meta comes onto the market with a headset that opens up further creative possibilities for us.

Apple has raised the bar significantly in terms of quality and performance and no other VR headset manufacturer has yet tried to compete with Apple in these aspects. Perhaps this is also because the math didn't work out so well for Apple.
