Meta VR Glasses: Meta's new 100-gram VR headset could fundamentally change VR

Meta introduces the Meta VR Glasses: just around 100 grams, Micro-OLED, eye and hand tracking, external compute puck, and a market launch in 2027.

Meta VR Glasses is the name of the new XR glasses that Meta unveiled at Connect 2026 – and this time, it is not simply the successor to the Meta Quest 3.

The new ones Meta VR Glasses look more like large glasses than a classic VR headset and weigh on the head only around 100 grams. This is made possible by a radically different design: the processor, battery, and storage are no longer housed in the glasses themselves, but in an external compute puck that is worn in a pants pocket, for example. They are connected via an optical cable.

A quite surprising return to VR

The presentation comes as quite a surprise. In public perception, Meta has recently been much more associated with AI Glasses, Ray-Ban Meta and Artificial Intelligence present. Classical VR hardware, by contrast, noticeably receded into the background.

Mark Zuckerberg addressed precisely this point during the presentation. Meta had intentionally wanted to develop fewer VR devices until genuinely major technological advances were possible. He now described the new VR glasses as just such a technological breakthrough.

So Meta is by no means withdrawing from virtual reality. Instead, the company is trying to solve one of the most fundamental problems of current VR and mixed reality devices: Weight and form factor. From our perspective, precisely this could be more important for the further development of VR than another leap in raw computing power.

Only 100 grams on the head

Probably the most important difference to devices like the Meta Quest 3 or Apple Vision Pro is the weight distribution. The Meta VR Glasses primarily contain displays, optics, cameras, and sensors. The processor, battery, and storage, on the other hand, are located in the external puck.

Because of this, the actual glasses weigh only around 100 grams and according to Meta, that is only about a fifth of a Quest 3. The outsourced compute puck also adds around 300 grams to the weight. However, this weight is no longer borne by the face and head.

The concept is partly reminiscent of the Apple Vision Pro's external battery, but goes significantly further: Meta is relocating not just the power supply, but also a large part of the processing unit out of the glasses.

This approach could be crucial, especially for longer usage. After all, one of the biggest drawbacks of today's VR headsets remains that several hundred grams of hardware have to be worn on the head for extended periods.

Micro-OLED and 37 pixels per degree

Meta is also taking a significant step forward with the displays. The so-called 5K Infinite Displays based on micro-OLED technology. Meta states a pixel density of 37 pixels per degree (PPD). The company highlights in particular the high text sharpness—an important point for virtual monitors and productivity applications.

According to the currently published technical data, the resolution 2,412 × 2,288 pixels per eye, the refresh rate reaches up to 120 Hz.

However, there is an important trade-off: according to current hands-on reports, the horizontal field of view is around 70 degrees. For comparison: The Meta Quest 3 sits at approximately 110 degrees. The high pixel density is therefore partly achieved by concentrating the available pixels onto a significantly smaller field of view.

Especially this point should prove interesting in a detailed review. For virtual monitors, movies, and many mixed reality applications, the high pixel density may be more important than a maximum field of view. In contrast, for fully immersive VR experiences, a smaller field of view might be more noticeable.

High-quality passthrough instead of transparent AR glasses

Despite their name, the Meta VR glasses are not a traditional transparent AR glasses. The view of the real world is still provided via cameras and Full-Color-Passthrough. Technically, the glasses therefore remain closer to a mixed-reality headset than to transparent waveguide glasses.

If you want to know more about how this technology works, you can also find our article on it here Passthrough mode in VR headsets.

However, the open design is interesting. The sides are not completely enclosed, allowing users to also perceive parts of their actual surroundings peripherally. In initial hands-on reviews, the camera image is rated positively, particularly due to low perceptible latency, good color reproduction, and significantly fewer geometric distortions than in previous Quest devices.

Eye tracking and hand tracking instead of controllers

Meta is also changing a lot when it comes to the control concept. The Meta VR Glasses are controlled by default via Eye Tracking, Hand Tracking and Voice controlled. Users can look at an element to focus on it and then select it using, for example, a pinch gesture.

Separate VR controllers are not part of the headset's basic concept. Additional downward-facing sensors are intended to detect hand movements even when the hands are, for example, in the user's lap.

This development is particularly interesting for professional XR applications. During short presentations, trade fair applications, or Training often represents an additional entry barrier. If users can simply look, point, reach, and select instead, interacting with spatial applications becomes significantly more intuitive.

Spatial Computing is becoming more important again

Meta does not position the VR glasses exclusively as a gaming headset. A central area of application is Spatial Computing.

Users can place multiple virtual monitors in the room. At the same time, a real table surface can be used as a virtual keyboard and touchpad via the so-called surface input function. Thanks to full-color passthrough, the table, smartphone, and surroundings remain visible.

In doing so, Meta is partly pursuing the same promise with which Apple originally positioned the Vision Pro: spatial computing instead of a traditional computer with a physical screen. However, the significantly lighter form factor could make a considerable difference.

According to Meta, the battery in the compute puck is supposed to last up to three hours persevere and supported 45-watt fast charging.

Entertainment: IMAX, 3D films, and immersive sports broadcasts

A second major focus is entertainment. Meta describes the VR glasses as the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are also supported.

Together with Disney and Industrial Light & Magic, special immersive movie versions are being created in which there is not just a large virtual movie screen in front of the user, but the virtual environment can also change to match the film.

Meta mentions Prime Video, YouTube, HBO Max, Paramount+, ESPN and other content providers, among others. Immersive sports broadcasts are also set to play a bigger role. Meta announces more than 100 immersive live sports events per year Gaming also remains a component of the system; more than 75 games are to be controllable exclusively via hand gestures at launch.

Hologram Calls: photorealistic avatars for video calls

Meta mentions another interesting feature Hologram. A photorealistic digital replica is created from a short smartphone recording. Facial expressions and movements are to be transmitted in real time during a call.

The topic is not new for Meta. The company has been researching photorealistic codec avatars for years. What is particularly interesting now is that such technology is actually set to become part of a consumer product.

With $1,299.99 USD are the Meta VR glasses priced significantly above the previous Quest product line. The market launch is for Spring 2027 planned. An official European price has not yet been announced.

Therefore, you shouldn't simply view the glasses as a Quest 4 replacement. Interesting in this context is our earlier article What will happen to the Quest 4?. At the time, reports about a lighter pair of glasses with an external compute puck were still based on leaks and hints. With the presentation of the Meta VR Glasses, it is now clear that Meta is indeed pursuing this new device class.

How the Meta VR Glasses stand out from the competition – Apple Vision Pro, PICO, Valves Steam Frame and the Bird-Bath glasses from XREAL – are detailed in Meta VR Glasses Comparison with Quest 3, Vision Pro, and Steam Frame, Including data tables for all six devices.

What do Meta VR glasses mean for professional XR applications?

For companies, it is less crucial whether Meta VR glasses become the next big consumer success in the long run. More exciting are the technological consequences.

  • VR headsets are becoming significantly lighter. A weight of around 100 grams could significantly reduce inhibitions at trade fairs, presentations, and training sessions.
  • Controllers are increasingly becoming optional. Eye tracking and reliable hand tracking enable applications that can be operated without prior explanation.
  • Mixed Reality is moving further into the spotlight. High-quality passthrough and open designs are increasingly blurring the line between virtual reality and mixed reality.
  • Spatial Computing is becoming more practical. Virtual screens, spatial interfaces, and real surfaces as input devices can become particularly interesting in visualization, training, and product presentation.

At design4real, we have been developing for many years Virtual reality and mixed reality applications for enterprises. Precisely for this reason, rather than any single new headset, what is interesting is the question of which new application concepts are made possible by a lighter form factor.

Conclusion: Perhaps more important than a Quest 4

Whether the Meta VR glasses actually work as convincingly in everyday use as they did in the initial hands-on reviews will only become clear with thorough testing. In particular, the comparatively small field of view of around 70 degrees and the cable connection to the compute puck remain clear compromises.

Nevertheless, the concept is remarkable. In recent years, VR did not primarily have a problem with insufficient computing power. Modern VR systems are already astonishingly powerful. The much bigger problem is often the Form factor.

Several hundred grams of weight, wide head straps, and a large device in front of the face continue to prevent VR hardware from being worn naturally for extended periods. This is precisely where the Meta VR Glasses come in.

With a weight of around 100 grams on the head, virtual reality could move significantly away from the classic headset and toward an actual pair of glasses for the first time.

And perhaps therein lies the biggest surprise of Meta Connect 2026: After Meta recently publicly [cut off] AI glasses and artificial intelligence was perceptible as too classic virtual reality, the company suddenly presents a decidedly ambitious VR device again – albeit one that wants to have as little to do with the traditional VR headset as possible.

Frequently asked questions about the Meta VR Glasses

What are the Meta VR glasses?

The Meta VR Glasses are a pair of XR glasses that Meta unveiled at Connect 2026. They weigh around 100 grams because the processor, battery, and storage are not located in the glasses themselves, but rather in an external compute puck connected via an optical cable.

When will the Meta VR glasses be released and how much do they cost?

Meta quotes US$1,299.99 and spring 2027 as the market launch. A price and a date for Germany have not yet been set.

Why do the Meta VR glasses weigh only 100 grams?

Because Meta is removing the heavy components from the glasses. The displays, optics, and sensors remain in the glasses, while everything else is housed in the compute puck. This makes the Meta VR glasses about five times lighter than a Meta Quest 3.

What is the compute puck of the Meta VR glasses?

A palm-sized accessory containing the processor, memory, and battery, worn for example in a trouser pocket. The connection to the glasses is via an optical cable.

Do the Meta VR glasses have transparent lenses?

No. The Meta VR Glasses work with high-quality passthrough: cameras capture the surroundings and display them on the micro-OLED displays. This allows for richer colors and true occlusion, but differs fundamentally from optical AR glasses with see-through lenses.

How are the Meta VR glasses operated?

Via eye tracking, hand tracking, and speech. Controllers are not required for basic operation.

What are hologram calls?

Video calls where the participants appear spatially in the room as photorealistic avatars instead of in a flat video window. Meta cites this as one of the central use cases for the Meta VR Glasses.

Are the Meta VR Glasses the successor to the Meta Quest 3?

No. The Quest 3 remains the gaming-oriented standalone headset. The Meta VR Glasses are aimed at spatial computing—media, virtual displays, and communication—and are significantly higher in price.

What do Meta VR glasses mean for professional XR applications?

Little in the short term: Trainings, showrooms, and simulations continue to run on Quest 3 and PICO 4 Enterprise. In the medium term, the form factor is crucial, because a device that can be put on in seconds significantly lowers the threshold for training and sales.
