These portable scanners make it possible to capture real environments as digital twins in the shortest possible time - with LiDAR geometry and photo-based data. But how do you get the maximum visual quality out of the captured data?<\/p><p>The answer may lie in a paid add-on: <strong>HD enhancement<\/strong>. In this blog post, we analyze the functions and <strong>Add-on features from <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.xgrids.com\/#\/tutorial?page=Studio\">Lixel Color Studio<\/a><\/strong> - and explain why maximum image sharpness is not an optional extra for us as an XR agency, but a must.<\/p><h3>The typical workflow with the Lixel scanner and Lixel Color Studio<\/h3><h4>Step 1: Scanning the scene with the Lixel scanner<\/h4><p>When scanning, the device generates two data records:<\/p><ul><li>LiDAR-based point clouds used for geometric reconstruction<\/li><li>360\u00b0 photos taken by the integrated all-round camera<\/li><\/ul><p>Depending on the environment, the recording usually takes 5 to 15 minutes.<\/p><h4>Step 2: Reconstruction in Lixel Color Studio<\/h4><p>The recorded data is then saved in <strong>Lixel Color Studio<\/strong> (also known as \"LCC Studio\"). There the conversion into a <a href=\"https:\/\/design4real.de\/en\/what-is-gaussian-splatting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gaussian splatting<\/strong><\/a>-format, optionally as:<\/p><ul><li>.ply file<\/li><li>.lcc file (internal, optimized standard of XGRIDS)<\/li><\/ul><p>In addition, a low-polygon mesh is generated that can be used as a collider or for navigation in real-time applications.<\/p><h3>The most important functions and settings<\/h3><p><strong>Lixel Color Studio<\/strong> offers some relevant parameters that have an influence on quality and computing time:<\/p><ul><li>Reconstruction speed: Faster reconstruction with lower precision<\/li><li>Video memory limit: Maximum use of the available GPU memory (e.g. 24 GB+)<\/li><li>Mobile optimization: compromise solution for low-performance end devices<\/li><li>Loop closure: Geometric consistency with closed scan paths<\/li><li>Transparency &amp; GPS data: For more complex use cases in AR and mapping<\/li><\/ul><h3>Why image quality is so crucial for XR applications<\/h3><p>A portable 3D scanner like the <a href=\"https:\/\/design4real.de\/en\/lixel-k1-3d-scanner-test\/\"><strong>Lixel Kity<\/strong>\u00a0K1<\/a> is an impressive solution - especially because it delivers a complete 3D scan within a few minutes. However, the integrated 360\u00b0 camera is limited in terms of image quality. It does not allow manual exposure or focus control. Users expect a photorealistic display. Soft edges, muddy details or color noise significantly disrupt the experience.<\/p><h4>Poor image quality weakens the impression<\/h4><p>A 3D scan of a high-quality location should also represent it in a high-quality way - just as with architectural photography, sharpness, dynamics and visual depth of detail are decisive for impact and perception. A blurred scan can unintentionally diminish the impression of the location.<\/p><h3>The camera test: L2, Kity K1 and L2 Pro in comparison - with and without HD enhancement<\/h3><p>We compared all three XGRIDS cameras - both with and without the <strong>HD enhancement<\/strong>:<\/p><ul><li>Lixel L2 (predecessor model) works in conjunction with an Insta 360 camera<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/design4real.de\/en\/lixel-k1-3d-scanner-test\/\">Lixel Kity K1<\/a><\/li><li>Lixel L2 Pro<\/li><\/ul><p>Each camera was tested in two variants:<\/p><ul><li>Only with the internal camera information<\/li><li>With activated <strong>HD enhancement<\/strong> and additional, externally shot photos<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Result: HD beats hardware<\/strong><br \/>Visual sharpness improves significantly with HD enhancement on all models. Particularly surprising:<\/p><p>One <strong>Lixel Kity K1<\/strong> with <strong>HD enhancement<\/strong> delivers a sharper result than a <strong>L2 Pro<\/strong> without HD - although the L2 Pro is almost twice as expensive.<\/p><p>Conclusion: It is not the hardware generation, but the use of the HD add-on that is decisive for the picture quality.<\/p><h3>HD enhancement: powerful, but not a sure-fire success<\/h3><p><strong>HD enhancement<\/strong> does not replace professional photo work. To achieve the improvement, additional:<\/p><ul><li>up to 500 external photos can be taken<\/li><li>with good exposure and sharpness<\/li><li>from suitable angles for the scanning movement<\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The workflow is therefore more complex - especially for large scenes - and more closely resembles the classic <\/span>Photogrammetry<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">but with more modern reconstruction algorithms. Compared to photogrammetry, the setup remains leaner, but without photographic know-how, the potential of the HD feature is not fully exploited.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e8b27d0 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"e8b27d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fa4c837 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"fa4c837\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67cc83a elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"67cc83a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42c75af elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"42c75af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-23602e7 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"23602e7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u00a0<\/p><h3>Conclusion: HD enhancement beats expensive hardware<\/h3><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Our tests clearly show:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The visual quality depends primarily on the use of the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">HD enhancements<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> not on the price or model of the hardware.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">A favorable <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Kity K1<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> with HD even beats a twice as expensive <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">L2 Pro<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> without HD.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">For <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">XR applications<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> with visual demands, there is no way around HD enhancement.<\/span><\/p><p><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Recommendation:<\/strong><\/p><p><b>If you want to impress with 3D scans -
