EmpathAI: Innovative language training in virtual reality with AI support

Agency: Design4real, Munich
Sponsor: FFF Bavaria

Aim of the project

Development of a AI-supported language training for people with a migration background to develop conversational skills and medical terminology to learn in German.

Project overview

EMPATH.AI - an innovative language training program for foreign medical and nursing professionals. In a time of skills shortages, we offer a solution that goes far beyond traditional learning. In our realistic VR environment, users can improve their communication skills while sharpening their empathy in dealing with patients and relatives. With avatars that respond to users' statements using integrated artificial intelligence, users receive direct and authentic feedback on what they say. EMPATH.AI makes it possible to confront the difficulties of professional languages in medicine and nursing in an interactive and safe environment and to practise language in real-life scenarios anytime, anywhere. Whether responding to the needs of patients or communicating with relatives, our immersive learning platform prepares professionals who are not yet language experts for the challenges of everyday clinical practice and boosts their confidence. EMPATH.AI - the innovative combination of technology, empathy and language skills.

Implementation

Using state-of-the-art AI technology, users' spoken words are analyzed and immediate feedback is given on content and tonality. This interactive method enables learners to continuously improve their language skills.

Special features

  • Active speaking: Users are encouraged to speak independently, creating a realistic language training experience.
  • AI feedback: Analysis and feedback on spoken content and tonality using AI technology.
  • Gamification: Playful elements promote motivation and learning progress.
  • Medical terminology: Specialization in medical terminology to develop specific conversational skills in a medical environment.
  • Role assumption: Students slip into the role of a young doctor who conducts a consultation with a virtual patient.
  • Reaction to performance: The virtual patient reacts to poor performance by the participants with negative comments, which increases the pressure and authenticity of the exercise.

Results

The project supports people with a migration background in improving their German language skills in the medical field. The interactive and playful approach increases motivation to learn and leads to sustainable progress in language skills.

Conclusion

Thanks to funding from the FFF Bayern, Design4real has developed a groundbreaking language training program that uses AI support and gamification. This project offers an effective solution for learning medical terminology and promotes the integration of people with a migration background into the German labor market.
