When I first encountered the term „Meta Reality,“ I inevitably thought it was a typo. But, surprise – another „-Reality“ neologism has stealthily snuck into the already overflowing glossary of immersive technologies.
„Meta Reality“ joins the parade of terms like Virtual Reality, Augmented reality, Mixed reality and Extended Reality. Here, Meta proudly presents another dazzling term, which is essentially a synonym for the company's own version of Mixed Reality. One might ask if we really need another term, or if this is just an attempt to impress an already XR-savvy audience with new coinages.
The lines between technologies like augmented and mixed reality are already blurry enough, and yet every major tech company seems intent on adding its own spin to the already tangled web of „-realities.“ Microsoft's „Mixed Reality“ and Zuckerberg's rebranding of Meta Quest as a pioneer of Metaverse Technologies are prime examples of this word acrobatics.
Behind this facade of marketing-driven buzzwords, however, there is often little substance. A closer look reveals that the differences between the „new“ and „old“ technologies are marginal. It seems as if the race to introduce the next dazzling term that shines in headlines is an integral part of every tech giant's strategy.
Perhaps, just perhaps, it's time to lift the veil of confusion and focus on what truly matters: educating the public about what these technologies can actually do. Instead of leading consumers into a thicket of jargon and marketing hype, it could be far more productive to highlight the real, tangible innovation. Because let's be honest – at the end of the day, it's the substance that counts, not the label it's given.
