How to become a virtual reality filmmaker

Virtual reality filmmaker

I first came into contact with virtual reality around 2014 when I tried out the Oculus Rift DK 2. This fascinating experience awakened in me the desire to become creative in this medium myself. I wanted to be a virtual reality filmmaker. Today, my agency Design4real is fully specialized in the design and development of virtual reality and augmented reality applications and I can look back on many successful projects.

Paths to VR storytelling

What is the quickest way to achieve creative storytelling in the field of virtual reality? There are basically two approaches.

The cinematic approach via 360° video

The first is the cinematic approach, in which immersive 360-degree films are with the appropriate cameras. For those with a film background, this may be the most direct route. Becoming a 360° filmmaker first requires an understanding of 360° cameras and the post-production process.

The Unreal Engine 5 real-time approach

The other way, which is closer to me personally as I have little film experience but rather come from the areas of post-production, special effects and 3D, is via Unreal Engine 5. Some may object that they have no experience in game programming and that Unreal Engine 5 is primarily known as a powerful game engine.

Experience with Unreal Engine

My experience with the Unreal Engine began two years ago. I realized that even without programming knowledge and with previous experience in other 3D programs such as Blender, 3ds Max or Cinema 4D, you can quickly find your way around the Unreal Engine.

Why Unreal Engine and not Unity 3D?

The reason why I would recommend the Unreal Engine for beginners rather than the Unity Engine from my many years of experience in VR is the speed at which graphically exciting results can be produced in the Unreal Engine 5. My expertise with the Unity Engine is much longer than with the Unreal Engine. Nevertheless, I manage to achieve good results faster in the Unreal Engine.

Beginners in Unreal Engine 5

If you're not familiar with Unreal Engine 5, there are a few things you'll need to do to get started:

  1. Download and install Unreal Engine 5: You can use Unreal Engine 5 free of charge from the Epic Games website.
  2. Create a new project: Once you have installed Unreal Engine 5, you can create a new project. You can choose from a variety of templates or start from scratch.
  3. Learn the basics of Unreal Engine 5: There are a number of resources that can help you learn the basics of Unreal Engine 5. You can find tutorials online or take a course.

Create your first VR film

Once you have a basic understanding of Unreal Engine 5, you can start creating your first VR movie. Here are a few tips:

  • Start with a simple idea: Don't try to create something too ambitious for your first movie. Start with a simple idea that you can finish in a short time.
  • Use ready-made assets: There are a number of pre-built assets available for Unreal Engine 5 that can save you time and effort. You can find pre-built environments, characters and props in the Unreal Marketplace.
  • Don't worry about perfection: Your first VR film doesn't have to be perfect. Just concentrate on creating something you are happy with.

Network and communityNetwork and community: It is essential to actively integrate yourself into the 360° filmmaking community. Exchanging ideas with like-minded people in online communities and forums offers valuable opportunities for feedback, inspiration and expanding your professional network. Specialized meetups are particularly recommended, such as the XR Bavaria Meetup. Such events are ideal platforms for making contacts in the VR scene and exchanging ideas with experts and enthusiasts. These interactions not only enrich your professional knowledge, but also open doors to new career opportunities.

You can also study virtual reality: For example Studying to become an immersive media designer is an innovative and future-oriented field that focuses on the creation of virtual and augmented reality content. Students learn to design immersive experiences that immerse users in fascinating virtual worlds. The curriculum includes technical skills in 3D modeling, animation and interactive design, paired with fundamentals of media theory and user experience design.
