VR Gaming

The 5 best VR headsets for gaming

More and more games are being developed for VR, and VR goggles are becoming increasingly powerful. Major AAA games such as Assasin's Creed and Resident Evil have also been adapted for virtual reality.

Cordless VR glasses are the standard

We only recommend wireless glasses for gaming.
In today's gaming world, VR glasses that can only be connected to a PC via a cable are becoming increasingly outdated. Stand-alone VR glasses, such as the Pico model, offer an advanced and adaptable alternative. They not only enable a wired connection, but also a wireless connection to the PC via WLAN. This type of connection delivers performance that is in no way inferior to wired glasses.

Not that we have much time to play... but when we do, these are the best VR glasses for gaming for us.

Meta Quest 2

The Meta Quest 2 is an all-in-one VR headset with impressive performance and portability. It offers wireless gameplay, high-quality graphics and a wide range of games. With its high resolution and 90 Hz display, it offers an immersive gaming experience. The Quest arguably has the largest game catalog of any headset and is probably the world's most popular VR headset. However, the Quest 3 is clearly superior to its predecessor in all areas.

However, the Quest 2 is now available at a very reasonable price of €299.

Sony PlayStation VR 2

The PlayStation VR 2 is a VR headset designed specifically for use with the PlayStation 5. With a wide selection of exclusive games, it is a good choice for PlayStation console owners. The PlayStation VR2 is the successor to the PlayStation VR and offers a range of improvements that take VR gaming to the next level. Resolution and refresh rate The PlayStation VR2 offers a resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye, which is four times the resolution of the PlayStation VR. This results in a significantly sharper and more detailed image. The PlayStation VR2 also offers a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, which makes the display of movements smoother and more realistic. Tracking The PlayStation VR2 uses an improved tracking system that tracks the movements of the headset and controllers with greater accuracy. This results in a more immersive gaming experience. The headset uses four integrated cameras to track the movements of the head and eyes. The controllers use adaptive triggers and haptic feedback to provide a more realistic feel.

Pico4

The Pico 4 is a solid headset for gaming with advanced, flat pancake lenses. The games catalog is also impressive. However, it is not as large as the games offered on the Quest2 and Quest3. The Pico 4 also works solidly in Link mode on the PC. Here it simulates a Steam VR headset and allows you to play VR games from the Steam Store such as Half-Life Alyx. However, the Pico 4 is clearly inferior to the Quest 3 in terms of computing power and therefore the price of €350 seems a little too high.

    • Frame rate: Up to 90 Hz

Quest 3

With the new Quest 3, Meta has once again made the competition look old thanks to its superior performance and groundbreaking mixed reality technology.
Meta Quest 3 is the successor to Meta Quest 2 and offers a range of improvements that make the VR experience even more immersive and exciting.

Resolution and refresh rate

The Meta Quest 3 offers a resolution of 2160 x 2160 pixels per eye, which corresponds to an increase of 50 % compared to the Meta Quest 2. This results in a significantly sharper and more detailed image.

The Meta Quest 3 also offers a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, which makes the display of movements smoother and more realistic. This is particularly important for action games and games with fast movements.

Tracking

The Meta Quest 3 uses an improved tracking system that tracks the movements of the headset and controllers with greater accuracy. This leads to a more immersive gaming experience and reduces the likelihood of motion sickness.

The headset uses four integrated cameras to track the movements of the head and eyes. The controllers use adaptive triggers and haptic feedback to provide a more realistic feel.

Design and ergonomics

The Meta Quest 3 has a new design that is lighter and more comfortable to wear. The headset is made from a new material that is more breathable and causes less perspiration.

Price and availability

The Meta Quest 3 is now available for 550 euros.

Conclusion

The Meta Quest 3 is a powerful VR goggle that takes the VR experience to the next level. It offers a number of improvements, including higher resolution, a higher refresh rate, improved tracking, a new design and an integrated 3D audio system. The Meta Quest 3 is a great choice for those who want the top quality gaming experience. At €550, it is not the cheapest VR headset, but the price is justified by the many features.

Quest Pro (no longer sold)

The Quest Pro is a high-priced version of the Meta Quest, which is equipped with more modern pancake lenses and delivers better ergonomics and image quality overall than its predecessor, the Quest 2. Personally, I find the Quest Pro headset a little too expensive purely for gaming and also a little large. I would prefer the Quest 3 here. Incidentally, the Quest Pro is hardly available any more and is a discontinued model.

With eye tracking and face tracking, the Quest Pro has two features that the Quest 3 no longer has. However, there are hardly any possibilities for gamers to use these features anywhere, with the exception of applications such as VR chat.

The best graphics card for VR gaming

A powerful graphics card is essential for an outstanding VR gaming experience. Currently, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT are the frontrunners on the market. These graphics cards not only offer impressive performance, but also support the latest VR technologies such as ray tracing and artificial intelligence. The GeForce RTX 4090 is particularly known for its ability to deliver stunning graphics at high frame rates, which is crucial for a smooth and realistic VR experience. The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT, on the other hand, scores with its excellent price-performance ratio and its ability to handle even the most demanding VR games with ease. However, it is important to note that the best graphics card for VR gaming also depends on the specific requirements of the game in question.
